FUHU and Michelin-Starred Chef Alvin Leung Take Vibe Dining To New Heights

Everyone in Malaysia is familiar with Genting Highlands, a cool hill station which stands majestically at 6,000 feet above sea level, set amidst a tropical jungle that is 130 million years old. A mere 45-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur, it’s a favourite getaway destination for local and foreign visitors alike.

Nightlife at Genting is about to get better with Zouk Group, known for one of Asia’s best nightclub brands Zouk, opening its first-ever vibe dining restaurant, FUHU Restaurant & Bar, at Resorts World Genting (RWG).

A Sumptuous Celebration of Food

Meaning ‘lucky tiger’ in Mandarin, FUHU is the coalescence of dining, music and nightlife. Arriving at FUHU’s entrance, diners will be welcomed by a chinoiserie décor that plays on elements found in traditional Chinese apothecaries, juxtaposed against a garden of wonder brought to life by artful lighting and pop art graffiti. This fanciful welcome prepares you to what awaits at the end of the tunnel, an experiential dining to a heightened sensory level.

Seating up to 150 diners, the 8,000 square feet (750 square metre) space transports guests into a whimsical world of wonders. Floor-to-ceiling panels of visually arresting murals surround the restaurant interior, hand painted by Malaysia’s own graffiti artist extraordinaire, Kenji Chai. Elements of traditional Chinese culture such as rosewood chairs and Ming-dynasty blue and white porcelain motifs co-exist with leatherette banquettes, which harken to the supper club of the eighties.

World-Class Dining Experience by Michelin-starred Chef Alvin Leung

We asked chef Alvin Leung about the concept behind the restaurant, and he explained that “FUHU is about fun; a spin-off of what the Zouk brand stands for. Dining at FUHU is the beginning of a great night out – this is where the fun starts with dishes that are modern, yet homely and comfortable, distinctly Asian, but with a touch of western flair.”

More than just a restaurant, FUHU is a unique dining experience that offers contemporary Chinese cuisine by chef Alvin Leung, served with exciting twists in a fun and lively atmosphere. We were especially charmed by the way the waiting staff served the dishes, something to experience for yourself! For those who live for their social media posts, the food at FUHU is as picture-worthy as it is delectable.

The menu at FUHU lends to both multiple rounds of grazing, or full-blown Chinese meals, complete with rice and dishes – all presented in high style. The culinary mastermind also pays homage to different Asian influences in his menu, fusing dishes and flavours from around the world. The chef also hinted that he’s willing to consider Malaysian-inspired dishes in the future.

Asked if he has any favourite dish from the menu to recommend us, the chef said that he hopes that every single item in the menu to be a signature dish. But from our limited experience at the restaurant, we can say that some of the must-eats on the menu include the FUHU Roasted Duck, complete with truffle morel sauce as the choice accompaniment, Aromatic Crispy Duck, Boston Lobster Noodles with ginger and scallions, Szechuan-style Hot & Sour Lobster Soup, The Generals Fried Chicken & Waffle, and Quark Quark Rice Soup.

Creative Cocktails for an Immersive Dining Experience

Completing the dining experience is the excellent selection of drinks. Helming the bar is chief mixologist Saam Pranill, with over 20 years of experience creating cocktails at top bars across Asia. Pranill curated FUHU’s cocktail menu with its Chinese origins in mind, using Asian ingredients and presented in traditional methods. Drawing his inspiration from his travels, Pranill created an entire cocktail menu, each with a unique vessel, hand-picked from different Southeast Asian antique stores, guaranteeing an experience that is steeped in Asian roots.

A signature cocktail is Drunken Tiger, made using gin, Campari, Martini Rosso, and every Asian’s go-to herbal cough syrup Nim Jiom Pei Pa Koa garnished with orange zest, presented in a dried gourd. Fu Tong, a vodka, Midori, calamansi lime juice, jasmine tea and puffed rice mix is also presented in a traditional herb container. Another signature cocktail, The Reunion comes in a Chinese tea set, containing a concoction of bourbon, honey, calamansi lime juice, cinnamon, orange slices, hot water and hongzao (red dates). We love it that the cocktails are also created with a communal spirit in mind, with serving formats and portions made for sharing amongst friends.

More Than Just Dining, An Experience Not To Be Missed

At FUHU, you will be taken on a journey that begins with a Chinese apothecary shop that greets guests at the entrance, and leads to a hidden garden corridor that guides the passage towards the restaurant. The path culminates in a visually stunning, life-sized Sakura tree in the main dining area that looms over diners as they eat. Whether you are here for a pre-party dinner or a tipple to end the night with a high note, FUHU is an experience not to be missed.
