Facebook Dating is Now Available in Malaysia, How is it Different from Others?

Anyone remembers the good-old OKCupid days? Just us? Ok.

Back then dating sites were more comprehensive, where you’d have to fill up an extensive profile. Even today, OKCupid still has sections such as aspirations, talent, traits, media (of choice), hobbies and a couple of other interesting boxes to fill. This is the part where you get to impress potential matches by listing Kierkegaard and Albert Camus as your favourite authors, even if you have no idea who they are.

Profile of yours truly. Success rate is 0%.

Arguably, this is a more exciting way of presenting yourself as you get to show what kind of person you are. And it’s easier for other people to see if they share the same values or interest, so you’ll have a conversation starter rather than, “Ohai you have nice cheekbones.”

The Rise of 2nd-Gen Dating Apps

Since Tinder was introduced, online dating has become superficial; users swipe based on appearance alone without looking at the bio (which most people don’t even bother to fill).

Another popular dating app that has surfaced is Coffee Meets Bagel, which requires users to fill more information and then the app matches the users with people who have similar interests, height, religion, among others. What makes Coffee Meets Bagel different is that women get to see who are interested in them and approach as they may.

Oh, we would like to tell you something about Paktor, another dating app. From our experience, the app makes it very tempting for you to get the premium account because you see girls take interest in you. But upon subscribing, we realised those profiles were fake. So try at your own risk.

A New Player Has Entered the Battle!

One thing that is similar about all these dating apps is they let you connect with strangers, often people who are in proximity.

But now, Facebook, the largest social network of all, is trying to shake up the dating industry. It already has the largest database of users, who have willingly filled up their details, and Facebook can surely use it to its advantage.

A sneak peak on how the feature is going to be like.

Instead of connecting you to people you don’t know who could potentially be serial killers, Facebook encourages you to re-kindle your connection with friends, colleagues, or whoever it is in your FB network. This could make an interesting dynamic as you already know some details about the person.

Facebook will suggest potential candidates, then you can select up to 9 people as your ‘crush’. If they do the same, it’s a match!

Try Facebook Dating Now

Interestingly, Malaysia is one of the first countries that got to try this new feature. Simply open your Facebook app, click the burger menu and select Dating, and Facebook will take you through the steps.

After registering, it’ll take a while for Facebook to start recommending people.

So go on, it’s time to re-kindle your relationship with that ex-schoolmate you haven’t talked to in 10 years. Til then, we wish you ada jodoh dan murah rezeki!
